New Year, new rules
For the record, I did not spend more than $30 on any single clothing item I purchased this year. TOTALLY ROCKED THIS PROJECT. But looking back over 2010, I realize that I failed to take into account a general overall budget for the year. So while I had a spending cap on clothing items, I wasn’t really thinking long-term. (I’m not so great at managing my finances, remember?...

At the End of the World with Gauntlet Hair →
perpetua: This is a story I wrote for the Awl as part of their The End of the World series of pieces in which it is assumed that the world will end in 2012. This piece is written from the future, around this time next year perhaps. It is in some ways a sequel to the year-end story I wrote for the Awl last year, The Ballad of That Guy From Titus Andronicus. I am happy with how it turned out, and...

fightwithknives asked: As a cocktailer, I really recommend staying away from all whiskeys if you want to go completely gluten free. I'd stay away from vodka, too, not just because it is terrible but because certain vodkas are made from grain.

Rum and tequila are always safe, and delicious sipped or in cocktails. Oronoco is the best rum ever; it's sweet and marshmallowey and I highly recommend...

– I am currently on a mission to find an artist that my little brother and I can both enjoy. After a discussion about Kanye sampling King Crimson, I suggested that he give Marnie Stern a whirl. Sasha Frere-Jones’ review was just used as another persuasion tactic.

thisis asked: Best as I can tell is that bourbon is sweet and other whiskeys are...not. They can kind of taste like molten sandpaper if you drink them straight. Mix some sugar, water, and bitters with a couple of shots of whiskey of any kind and you have an old fashioned, which are tasty and easy and let you tell people that you're drinking old fashioneds.

Q & A
Vicky asked me a question, but I hit publish and then delete in a frenzy all by accident and then the question disappeared and basically I screwed that one up. She said, “What’s the fanciest you’ve ever been?” To which my first response was, “You fancy huh?” Sorry. Had to. When I was a kid, we used to visit my great aunt and uncle in California every summer....

End of the year burn-out
hey all! Apologies for the sporadic posting. I think I am experiencing a bit of a crash. In terms of outfits, I just feel like rocking jeans at the moment. In terms of music, all I want to listen to is Robyn and Rihanna. I think once the holiday blitz of wrapping and food and family has passed, I’ll be inspired once again. So stick around.

– Kanye West Week: “Hell Of A Life” at No Trivia In this very sharp essay, Brandon Soderberg dissects the most lyrically fascinating song on Kanye’s new album. I had intended to pick at this song myself down the line, but I think Brandon has done a much better job of it than I would have. Please do...

WatchWatch
My good friend (and yoga instructor!) Marko shared this video and I wanted to pass it along. Sadly, you might notice that when the camera pans to the audience… it’s mostly women. It would be great if more men got to hear it as well.

(HT: J) Highlighting the proportionally few women in our directory is a way to give prominence to their work. That’s it. Writing
This morning one of my favorite critics Tom Ewing asked an interesting question of his followers: What’s the best thing you wrote this year? In addition to the post I did about Sufjan, I like these as well: Show review of The National for mtvU - I thought the High Violet backlash was pretty ridiculous, but this was when I experienced first-hand the “harm” (In terms of...
